Can you believe it… two posts in one day! I posting all the work that I did here and leading up to coming here. Since the laptop fried, the photos are unedited so there is some serious color correcting and cropping to do but wanted to show off my Spain collection. Imagine the whites to be true white and without distraction of the wall :)
This is the Architect´s Daughter series. This is a concept I have been working with since the fall. It is about the idea of stripping away unnecessary elements that come with gender and expectations of gender and consciously building an authentic identity of your own making. There is an element of tearing away and building back up- all a metaphor for emotional and psychological consciousness.
The Seamstress series:
again imagine that the whites are very white and the cropping out of distraction…
The Seamstress is based on my sister but also is informed by my heritage. Generations of women in my family have been involved in the fiber arts, myself and my sister as well. This is based off the idea of mending and construction. The idea again is the stripping away of emotional layers and maintaining what is important. The stitching into the layers indicates the conscious retainment of identity with the bottom layer as a indicator of a whole essence.
RED: The red in my work is a very emotional color… it is a color of blood- our life essence but a symbol of love, hate, passion and aggression. We have a strong association with color and even the psychology behind color urges unconcious hunger. I always associate red as “everything she ever loved” because after all… can´t love (of a partner, family, vocation, place) do all of these things?
I wanted to end with pics of the “former home” installation lit. I think it has more power that way as does the other (but the other looks better on a white wall).
I said a tearful goodbye to my work today. There is a lot of me in it and it´s crazy to think it lives on here. Sergio and I completed filming on the “heather” documentary today in which he caught a little of my emotionalness on camera (oh my!)
Tonight, Paco´s opening… tomorrow, MADRID!
ps… here´s some links that I´m on here in Spain… so crazy! check them out!
