Rakel

Last night after I left the computer room, I treated myself again to another one of my rosebud gelatis.  It was so good and let me just tease you about it for a moment… crem caramel, biscotti, and nutella flavors made up the petals of the gelati flower.  Completely ridiculously amazing…

I was off to another opening last night but as I ate my gelati I enjoyed a street band of 20 somethings from I think Australia.  It was so great because they did lots of British garage band tunes of the late 70´s on a guitar, mandolin, violin and snare drum.  I loved it! But it came time to meet Sergio and off we were to Rakel´s opening at a local pub.

So from what I´m told… this is the pub where the cool people of Zaragoza go- kinda underground, alternative type of place.  And they make the best croquettes (even though I really have no others to compare them to) which were such a delight.

Rakel´s show was called Mystic Garden and was named after a piece of music she was listening to while she painted the series.  Her inspiration was composed by Omar Faruk Tekbilek and I got to hear (sort of) the music while the pub played it in honor fo her show.

Rakel was nice enough to explain her artist statement to me.  To refresh your memory, she is part of the art group and participated in the action painting for the La Harinera conference.  She is part of such a generous a fun group that I have enjoyed spending time with while I´ve been here, but I digress…

Her work is about the universal context of music and how it´s context fuses our dreams and our soul.  The work itself was very dreamy and layered with textures that I adored.  Images emerge from the abstract and then fade back into its atomosphere.

I really enjoyed the night and chatted with almost everyone.  Olga and Esther made a collective effort to chat with me which was fun… I was making very simple attempts at my Espanol and they were working with a few (more) words of Ingles.  We did ok but Olga likes to use the phrase “what a pity” when we all agree how much we would like to know each other better if we didn´t have the language barrier.  It is a pity!  All in all, we had a fun night and then headed home.

Believe it or not, I have reported about lots of day trips and sightseeing but I have been doing some work here!  Today I am trying to pull in the last elements on my 2 installations that I have built during my visit.  I have a showcase on Tuesday of all the work that is here and they have planned a little send off for me that night.

I had a nice visit with Rakel today at the studio and I am off to see hers tomorrow.  We seem to enjoy some similiar artistic influences and exchanged a few that we didn´t know.  It´s nice to have that sort of food for thought and inspiration.
